Peanut butter Ritz crackers mislabeled as cheese lead to nationwide recall

Ritz cracker snack packs have been recalled nationwide because they contain peanut butter but were mislabeled as only having cheese.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming” the mislabeled cracker packs, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday in a press release.

No deaths or adverse reactions have been reported due to the mislabeled cracker packs.

Ritz’s parent company, Mondelēz Global, said the incorrectly labeled packages were individually wrapped 8-pack, 20-pack and 40-pack Ritz cracker sandwiches. The company said the crackers were distributed nationwide and did not say exactly how many were mislabeled.

“All outer cartons affected are labeled correctly and provide an allergen advisory statement indicating that the product ‘contains peanuts,’” the FDA said in its press release.

Mondelēz said it issued the recall voluntarily after discovering a supplier error with the individually wrapped packages. Crackers labeled “peanut butter” are not part of the recall, as they already provide the correct warning.

The recalled crackers have “best by” dates ranging from Nov. 1, 2025, to Jan. 22, 2026, according to Mondelēz.

The snack manufacturer has run into this problem in the past. Mondelēz issued a similar recall in May 2020, when peanut butter cracker sandwiches were also mislabeled as cheese and recalled over allergy concerns.
